| From Hoodric (V43mania)
"I've run both an 80GB 2.5" and a 300GB 3.5" drive from my V43. Here are some tips and tricks.
External Box (what your HDD is installed into) You have to make sure the external box your HDD is in is UMS compliant; which it will be in 99% of cases. When plugging it into an XP machine if it detects it as "Generic USB Mass Storage Device" then it's UMS compliant. If your external box needs a driver to work in XP then you've got a snowballs chance of getting it to work.
Your Drive The V43 itself is formatted with FAT32 so we know it can read FAT32 partitions. Being Linux based there's a chance it can read EXT3 partitions but then Windows wouldn't be able to read it so we can forget that idea.
So you need to make sure your external drive is partitioned and formatted with FAT32. The problem is that XP/2K impose artificial limits on formatting in FAT32. By default XP/2K will let you create large FAT32 partitions, but they'll only let you format up to 32GB. Creating multiple partitions on one drive is no problem for a computer but the V43 can only recognise the primary partition so you need to format the drive as one large FAT32 partition which XP/2K won't let you do.
This is where third party software comes in. Your external HDD may have come with a utility to allow you to beat these aritificial limits, if it did, use that (the limits are artificial because FAT32 is good up to 2TB but Microsoft figured forcing people to use NTFS on large drives was a good idea).
If you don't already have tools to do this here's a link FAT32 Formatter
Instructions for what to do are on that page so I won't waste time copying/pasting what's there. Make sure you format the correct drive letter, formatting the wrong drive will erase your data (you have been warned). I used it to successfully to format my 300GB drive with FAT32 which my V43 has no trouble reading.
Quote: Originally Posted by Living in Korea I use 3 hard drives on my main computer. Two are FAT32 and one is NTFS. I have no problem running stuff from the NTFS drive to the V43. The FAT32's jerk me a bit, though! The V43 should be formatted FAT32.
When connecting to a computer with XP/2K the way the drives are formatted doesn't matter because the computer is acting as the host and the V43 is merely the slave. The computer is doing all the work and because XP/2K can read and write to all versions of FAT and NTFS it should have no trouble working together. I have no idea why your FAT32 drives jerk you round, I suspect something is wrong with them or your system rather than the V43.
Lack of power isn't a problem, he's using a 250GB drive which means it's a 3.5" drive and therefore requires an external power supply. If it were a 2.5" trying to take all it's power from the host port there is a chance it wouldn't be able to get what it needs but from my experience the host port supplies the full 500mA @ 5V as per the USB specifications."

| In any case, now I know why mine is not recognized by my V43. When I connect my HD to my PC, it is recognized as a HD and not as a mass stogare USB (not like my usb key usb)
En tout cas, maintenant je sais pourquoi le mien n'est pas reconnu par mon V43. Quand je branche mon DD à mon pc, il est reconnu comme étant un DD et non pas un mass stogare USB (enfin, pas comme une clé usb en tout cas)

| So I conclude (for my part) like in the french topic (learn French if U want details!!) For some HD U must add an external supply of 5V (mandatory). But above all be careful of the intensity needed for U're external HD. mines need 1 A and 0,6 A some external power supply reach only 0,5 A !!! => it does not work V43 support 0,5 A (or 500 mA ) => it does not work external power supply of the v43 is 5V, 3A => it works for me when I plug the V43 power adaptator on my external HD box And it works better when v43 is supplied too (I suppose there is power loss in USB cable)

0,5 A = 500 mA and not 5 mA (if I have good memorises about my electrical lectures) Or maybe you mean V43 support 500 mA or 5 mA ?

Secondly i would request if anyone can compile the linux kernel for T43 with NTFS enabled (some liinux guys have actually hacked to read/write NTFS) so it will enable my T43 to access NTFS partition. Thanks

| If it matters. Be careful! I have had Qtopia/V43 wipe my flash drive multiple times! Be really careful about disconnecting! | |
